Events in Vilnius, dedicated to the 150th Anniversary of Komitas and the 104th Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide

24 April, 2019

On the occasion of the 104th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide and the 150th birth anniversary of Komitas an event took place at the Vilnius Applied Arts Museum on April 24. The concert was initiated and organized by the Armenian Embassy in Lithuania with the support of the Armenian Ministry of Culture and the Armenian community of Lithuania.

An all-Komitas wxclusive program was performed by honored artist of Armenia, soprano Hasmik Papyan and pianist Armine Grigoryan, director of Aram Khachaturian Museum.

The concert was attended by heads of diplomatic corps in Lithuania, high-ranking officials of the Lithuanian government, members of the Lithuanian Parliament, as well as public, political and cultural figures, intellectuals, and representatives of the Armenian community.

In his remarks Ambassador of Armenia to Lithuania Tigran Mkrtchyan expressed his gratitude to the Lithuanian Parliament for recognizing the Armenian Genocide and mentioned that April 24 is celebrated as the Day of Remembrance of the Armenian Genocide in many capitals of the world. The Ambassador noted that the Day of Remembrance could be an opportunity for acknowledging the past and laying foundations for a better future adding that there is a better choice for Turkey than to justify and glorify those who perpetrated the Genocide.

Earlier on the same day, a commemoration ceremony of the martyrs of the Armenian Genocide convened at the monument to Lithuanian gulag deportees. The ceremony was organized by the Armenian community of Vilnius and the Genocide and Resistance Research Centre of Lithuania with the support of the Embassy of Armenia to Lithuania. During the ceremony remarks were delivered by Ambassador of Armenia to Lithuania Tigran Mkrtchyan, head of Lithuania-Armenia Parliamentary Friendship Group Guoda Burokienė, as well as Ruslan Harutyunyan on behalf of the Armenian community of Lithuania and prominent prose writer Vahagn Grigoryan.
